Letters

What are letters of application?

Letters are normally used:

  • to request more information resulting from a job advert;
  • as a covering letter when sending a CV or application form;
  • as a letter of application when instructed by an employer to apply in writing; or
  • speculatively, to find out from an employer if they have suitable vacancies

Are all application letters the same?

Although the content of each of these letters will vary, some features will remain the same:

  • Including your address, telephone number and the date (top right-hand corner)
  • A named person or 'Dear Madam/Sir'
  • Ending with 'Yours sincerely' if you use a named person, or 'Yours faithfully' if you use 'Dear Madam/Sir'
  • Your signature with your name printed underneath
  • Details of the job you're applying for and where it was advertised (with the exception of speculative letter
  • Word process your letter if possible.
  • Keep the letter to one side of A4.)
