Personal Advisers

Connexions Personal Advisers are trained to help you deal with things that might be going on in your life. This could be about:

  • choices in learning and work
  • education
  • jobs
  • training
  • money
  • leisure and volunteering

Advisers can also support you on other things like:

  • health
  • housing
  • relationships

What happens when you see a personal adviser?

A personal adviser will tell you about the things they can help with and explain what information they can keep confidential. They will ask you what you want to talk about.  If you have lots of things, they will help you to decide which are most important to sort out first. You may need to see the adviser a few times to get everything sorted.

Personal advisers can:

  • talk through your options
  • help you make the decisions that are right for you, but we won't decide for you
  • provide confidential and practical support
  • give you up-to-date information
  • put you in contact with people who can give you more specialist help.

Who can see a personal adviser?

Connexions is for everyone aged 13 -19 (and up to 25 if you have a learning difficulty or disability).  Everyone has different needs. Some people may need to see a personal adviser and some may not.

How do you get to see a personal adviser?

You can see a personal adviser in your school or college, a Connexions Centre or in some youth advice centres.

You can contact Connexions yourself or someone else can make an appointment for you. For example, if you are at school, you can ask your Connexions/careers co-ordinator to make an appointment for the next time the personal adviser comes into your school.

Usually, an adviser will see you 1.2.1 . Sometimes it might be in a group - for example, to talk about options when you leave school.

What if you need additional support?

If you have a learning difficulty or disability, a Connexions Personal Adviser will arrange to see you in year 9 to talk about your plans for the future. This will help you to prepare for your transition review. The personal adviser will attend the review with you. We have a booklet about transition planning - ask your personal adviser for a copy or phone 0800 358 3888.

In year 10 , the adviser will check how things are going.  Early in year 11, your adviser will see you again to help you make definite plans for the future and to sort out your support needs.
